(National Liberal) for Renfrew West between 1950 and 1964.3 He held the office of Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation between 1951 and 1952.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1952.3 He held the office of Minister of State, Colonial Office between 1956 and 1957.3 He held the office of Secretary of State, Scotland between 1957 and 1962.3 He was awarded the Companion of Honour (C.H.) in 1962.3 He was created 1st Viscount Muirshiel, of Kilmacolm, co. Renfrew [U.K.] on 16 July 1964. He was appointed Knight, Order of the Thistle (K.T.) in 1973.3 On his death, his viscountancy became extinct.3
