He was educated at Glenalmond College, Glenalmond, Perthshire, ScotlandG.2 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.2 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the Scottish Horse Imperial Yeomanry.2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) and two bars.2 He fought in the Boer War.2 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant in the 15th Hussars.2 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches five times.2 He gained the rank of Captain, promoted on the field for gallantry.2 He gained the rank of Major in the Middlesex Regiment.2 In 1920 he lost the Lochbuie estate to Sir Stephen Gatty as the result of a law suit , but Moy Castle seems to have been retained as a family possession.2
