He was educated at Scots College, Paris, France.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Forfarshire between 1735 and 1787.1 He was created 1st Earl of Panmure, of Forth [Ireland] on 6 April 1743. He was Colonel of the 25th Regiment of Foot between 1747 and 1752.1 He held the office of Colonel between 1752 and 1770, 21st Regiment of Foot.1 He was Colonel of the 2nd Dragoon Regiment between 1770 and 1782.1 He gained the rank of General in April 1770.1 On his death, his titles became extinct.3
