     He lived at Madron House, Hythe, Kent, England^G.² He was educated at Melbourne College, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia^G.¹ He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England^G.¹ He served in the North West Frontier between 1897 and 1898.¹ He gained the rank of in 1903 in the Seistan Boundary Commission.¹ He graduated from Staff College, Camberley, Surrey, England^G.¹ He served at Tibet.¹ He fought in the First World War, he was mentioned in despatches four times.¹ He was Commander of the Welsh Guards.¹ He gained the rank of Brevel Lieutenant-Colonel.¹ He was General Officer Commanding of the 11th Brigade.¹ He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917.² He was awarded the Chevalier, Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur.¹ He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1919.² He was Commander of the 142nd Brigade between 1924 and 1928.¹ He was the Commandant between 1928 and 1931 at Hythe Wing Small Arms School, Hythe, Kent, England.¹ He gained the rank of Honorary Brigadier-General in 1931 in the 5th King Edward’s Own Probyn’s Horse.¹ He served in the Civil Defence during the First World War.¹ He was Brigadier of the North London sub-area between 1939 and 1941.¹

     Catherine Lumsden was the daughter of Harry Lumsden.¹ She married Sir John Hamilton Franks, son of Robert Fergusson Franks and Henrietta Bushe, on 8 December 1874.¹ She died on 20 March 1932.¹
