     He was with the Ceylon Civil Service between 1860 and 1864.² He edited the book Pali Texts, published between 1869 and 1874.² He was Professor of Pali and Buddhist Literature at University College London, London, England^G.² He was Sub-Librarian in the India Office between 1872 and 1873.² He wrote the book 1st Pali Dictionary, published between 1872 and 1875, 2 volumes.² He conclusively proved that Sinhalese (hitherto considered a Dravidian language) belonged to Indo-European linguistic family.²

     Mary Ann Stevens-Thomas was the daughter of Charles Stevens-Thomas.¹ She married William Barry, son of Samuel Barry and Annabella Harriett Paterson.¹ She died on 13 November 1901.¹

     Agnes Alexandra Frances Childers was the daughter of Reverend Charles Childers and Dulcibella Chester.^1,2 She married Charles William Barton, son of Thomas Johnston Barton and Frances Morris, on 26 October 1876.¹ She died on 18 August 1918.¹
     From 26 October 1876, her married name became Barton.¹

     Captain Charles Erskine Barton was born on 7 December 1882.¹ He was the son of Charles William Barton and Agnes Alexandra Frances Childers.¹ He married Nora Grace Greene, daughter of Henry Richard Greene, in November 1903.¹ He died in August 1918 at age 35 at France^G, killed in action.¹
     He fought in the First World War.¹ He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Irish Regiment.¹
