     He was given the name of Philip James Hamilton at birth.³ He was educated at Cheltenham College, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, England^G.³ He was educated in 1876 at Merton College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)³ Circa 1879 his name was legally changed to Philip James Hamilton-Grierson.³ He was admitted to Scot’s Bar in 1880 entitled to practise as a Advocate.³ He was Solicitor to the Board of Inland Revenue in Scotland between 1892 and 1919.³ He was appointed Knight in 1910.³ He wrote the book The Silent Trade: A Contribution to the Early History of Human Intercourse.³ He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G, in 1920.³ He had one other daughter.³

     Lilias Kirkpatrick was born on 23 February 1856 at Tamil Nadu, India^G.¹ She was the daughter of James Kirkpatrick.¹ She married Sir Philip James Hamilton-Grierson, son of John Hamilton and Margaret Grierson, on 27 April 1881.^3,1 She died on 17 July 1930 at age 74 at Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G.¹ She was buried at Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G.¹
     From 27 April 1881, her married name became Hamilton-Grierson.³ She lived in 1928 at 7 Palmerston Place, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G.⁴

     Philip Francis Hamilton-Grierson was born on 15 April 1883.¹ He was the son of Sir Philip James Hamilton-Grierson and Lilias Kirkpatrick.¹ He married Margaret Bartholomew, daughter of John George Bartholomew and Janet MacDonald, on 4 October 1928 at Drumelzier Parish Church, Drumelzier, Scotland^G.¹ He died on 19 February 1963 at age 79.¹ He was buried at Dean Cemetery, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland^G.¹
     He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Scots Fusiliers.¹ He fought in the Gallipoli Campaign.¹ He fought in the First World War, in Mesopotamia and Palestine.¹ He held the office of Advocate-General [Sudan] circa 1930.¹ He held the office of Judge of the High Court [Sudan] circa 1930.¹ He was Sheriff Substitute of Inverness, Elgin and Nairn on 12 October 1936.³ He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.)¹

     From 4 October 1928, her married name became Hamilton-Grierson.¹
