William Thomson, 1st and last Baron Kelvin was born on 26 June 1824 at Belfast, County Antrim, IrelandG.1 He was the son of James Thomson and Margaret Gardiner.1 He married, firstly, Margaret Crum, daughter of Walter Crum and Jessie Graham, in 1852.1 He married, secondly, Frances Anna Blandy, daughter of Charles Ridpath Blandy and Mary Anne Symonds, on 24 June 1874 at Madeira, PortugalG.1 He died on 17 December 1907 at age 83, without issue.1 He was buried on 23 December 1907 at Westminster Abbey, Westminster, London, EnglandG.3
He was educated at University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, ScotlandG.1 He was educated in 1845 at St. Peter’s College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He was Professor of Natural Philosophy between 1846 and 1899 at University of Glasgow, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, ScotlandG.1 He graduated from St. Peter’s College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1848 with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1851.1 He was appointed Knight Bachelor in 1866 for his services in helping to lay the trans-Atlantic cable.1 He held the office of President of the Royal Society between 1890 and 1895.1 He was created 1st Baron Kelvin, of Largs [U.K.] on 23 February 1892.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1896.1 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1902.1 He was awarded the Order of Merit (O.M.) in 1902.1 On his death, his title became extinct.1
