He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He was with the British Legation to St. Petersburg between 1856 and 1857.1 He was Précis writer to the Foreign Secretary between 1857 and 1858.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1878.1 He held the office of Assistant Under-Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs between 1882 and 1889.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1885.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1892.1 He held the office of Ambassador to Turkey between 1893 and 1898.1 He held the office of Ambassador to Italy between 1898 and 1903.1 He was created 1st Baron Currie of Hawley [U.K.] on 25 January 1899.1 On his death, his title became extinct.1

Mary Montgomerie Lamb was born on 24 February 1843.2 She was the daughter of Charles James Savile Montgomerie Lamb and Anna Charlotte Grey.1,2 She married, firstly, Henry Sydenham Singleton in 1864.1 She married, secondly, Philip Henry Wodehouse Currie, 1st and last Baron Currie of Hawley, son of Raikes Currie and Hon. Laura Sophia Wodehouse, on 24 January 1894.1 She died on 13 October 1905 at age 62.1
Mary Montgomerie Lamb used the pen-name of Violet Fane.1 From 1864, her married name became Singleton.1 From 24 January 1894, her married name became Currie.1 After her marriage, Mary Montgomerie Lamb was styled as Baroness Currie of Hawley on 25 January 1899.
