Richard Onslow, 1st Baron Onslow was born on 23 June 1654.1 He was the son of Sir Arthur Onslow, 1st Bt. and Mary Foote.1,3 He married Elizabeth Tulse, daughter of Sir Henry Tulse, on 31 August 1676.3 He died on 5 December 1717 at age 63.1
He was educated at St. Edmund Hall, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Guildford from 1678/79 to 1681.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Guildford between 1685 and 1687.3 He succeeded as the 2nd Baronet Onslow [E., 1674] on 21 July 1688.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Surrey from 1688/89 to 1710.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1690 in the 1st Marine Regiment.3 He was Commissioner for Lord High Admiral between 1690 and 1693.3 He was Lord of the Treasury and Chancellor and Under-Treasury of the Exchequer.3 He held the office of Speaker, House of Commons between 1708 and 1710.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1710.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for St. Mawes between 1710 and 1713.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Surrey between 1713 and 1715.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1714.3 He was High Steward of Guildford.3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Middlesex.3 He was Teller of the Exchequer between 1715 and 1717.3 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Surrey from 1716 to 1717.3 He was created 1st Baron Onslow, of Onslow, Shropshire and of West Clandon, co. Surrey [Great Britain] on 19 June 1716, with special remainder to the male heirs of uncle Denzil, and then to male heirs of his father, Arthur.3
