     Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 5th Bt. was the son of Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 4th Bt. and Dorothea Clerk-Maxwell.³ He married Rosemary Appleby, daughter of Joseph Dacre Appleby and Catharine Fleming.¹ He died in 1798, without issue.¹
     He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Clerk, of Penicuik, Edinburgh [N.S., 1679] on 29 January 1784.¹

     Joseph Dacre Appleby married Catharine Fleming, daughter of Rt. Rev. Sir George Fleming, 2nd Bt. and Catherine Jefferson.²
     He lived at Kirklington, Cumberland, England^G.¹

     Rosemary Appleby was the daughter of Joseph Dacre Appleby and Catharine Fleming.^3,4 She married Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 5th Bt., son of Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 4th Bt. and Dorothea Clerk-Maxwell.¹
     Her married name became Clerk.¹

     George Clerk was the son of Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 4th Bt. and Dorothea Clerk-Maxwell.² He died, unmarried.¹

     James Clerk was the son of Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 4th Bt. and Dorothea Clerk-Maxwell.² He married Janet Irving, daughter of George Irving of Newton, on 18 October 1786.¹ He died in 1793.¹
     He was in the Honourable East India Company Service.¹

     Janet Irving is the daughter of George Irving of Newton.² She married James Clerk, son of Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 4th Bt. and Dorothea Clerk-Maxwell, on 18 October 1786.¹
     From 18 October 1786, her married name became Clerk.¹

     Rt. Hon. Sir George Clerk of Penicuik, 6th Bt. was born in 1787.² He was the son of James Clerk and Janet Irving.² He married Maria Anne Law, daughter of Ewan Law and Henrietta Sarah Markham, on 13 August 1810.² He died on 23 December 1867 at Penicuik House, Penicuik, Midlothian, Scotland^G.³
     He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Clerk, of Penicuik, Edinburgh [N.S., 1679] in 1798.¹ He matriculated at Trinity College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G, on 21 January 1806.³ He graduated from Trinity College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, England^G, on 5 July 1810 with a Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.)³ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Midlothian between 1811 and 1820.² He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) in 1819.³ He held the office of a Lord of the Admiralty between 1819 and 1827.³ He held the office of a Lord of the Admiralty between 1828 and 1830.³ He held the office of Under-Secretary of the Home Department between 1830 and 1835.³ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Stamford between 1838 and 1847.² He held the office of Secretary of the Treasury in 1841.³ He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1845.² He held the office of Vice-President of the Board of Trade between 1845 and 1846.² He held the office of Master of the Mint between 1845 and 1846.² He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dover between 1847 and 1852.²

     John Clerk-Maxwell of Middlebie was born in 1790.¹ He was the son of James Clerk and Janet Irving.² He married Frances Cay, daughter of Robert Cay, in 1826.¹ He died on 3 April 1856.¹
     He lived at Middlebie, Dumfries-shire, Scotland^G.¹
