John Clerk of Penicuik1

     John Clerk of Penicuik was born on 22 December 1611 at Fettercain, ScotlandG.2 He was the son of William Clerk.3 He married Mary Gray, daughter of Sir William Gray of Pittendrum.1 He died in 1674.1
     In 1634 settled in Paris, and acquired a fortune, but then returned to Scotland.1 In 1646 he bought the lands and Barony of Penicuik.1 He lived at Penicuik, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He also had four younger sons and five daughters.1

Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 1st Bt.1

     Sir John Clerk of Penicuik, 1st Bt. was the son of John Clerk of Penicuik and Mary Gray.2 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Henderson, daughter of Henry Henderson, in 1674.1 He married, secondly, Christian Kirkpatrick, daughter of Reverend James Kirkpatrick.1 He died in 1722.1
     He was created 1st Baronet Clerk, of Penicuik, Edinburgh [Nova Scotia] on 24 March 1678/79.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for the County of Edinburgh [Scotland] between 1690 and 1702.1 In 1700 he bought the lands and Barony of Lasswade.1
