James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont1

James Caulfeild, 1st Earl of Charlemont was born on 18 August 1728 at Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG.3 He was the son of James Caulfeild, 3rd Viscount Charlemont and Elizabeth Bernard.4 He married Mary Hickman, daughter of Thomas Hickman, on 2 July 1768.1 He died on 4 August 1799 at age 70 at Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG.3 He was buried at Armagh, County Armagh, IrelandG.3
He succeeded as the 8th Lord Caulfeild, Baron of Charlemont, co. Armagh [I., 1620] on 21 April 1734.3 He succeeded as the 4th Viscount Charlemont, co. Armagh [I., 1665] on 21 April 1734.1 He held the office of Governor of County Armagh between 1749 and 1792.3 He was appointed Fellow, Royal Society (F.R.S.) on 29 May 1755.3 He was appointed Fellow, Society of Antiquaries (F.S.A.) on 5 June 1755.3 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Law (LL.D.) by Dublin University, Dublin, County Dublin, IrelandG, on 15 July 1755.3 He was commander of the the levies for the defence of Belfast against the French in 1760.3 He held the office of Custos Rotolorum of County Armagh between 1760 and 1799.3 He was created 1st Earl of Charlemont, co. Armagh [Ireland] on 23 December 1763.1 He was Commander-in-Chief of the Irish Volunteers in July 1780.1 He was appointed Knight, Order of St. Patrick (K.P.) on 5 February 1783.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] on 18 August 1783.3 He was President of the Royal Irish Academy between 1785 and 1799.3 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.5
