He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Kerr’s Dragoons.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dumfries Sheriffdom [Scotland] between 1700 and 1707.3 He was created 1st Baronet Johnstone, of Westerhall [Nova Scotia] on 25 April 1700, with a special remainder to his brother.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Dumfries Sheriffdom from 1707 to 1708.3
