He was a Covenanter.1 He endowed three bursaries at Aberdeen University.1 He was appointed Knight before 6 August 1621.2 He was created 1st Baronet Burnett, of Leys, co. Kincardine [Nova Scotia] on 21 April 1626, with special remainder to heirs male whatsoever.1

Robert Burnet, Lord Crimond is the son of Alexander Burnet of Leys and Katherine Gordon.1 He married, firstly, Beatrix Maule, daughter of William Maule of Glaster.1 He married, secondly, Rachel Johnston, daughter of James Johnston.1
He held the office of Lord of Session [Scotland].1 He was styled as Lord Crimond [Scottish Law Lord] in 1661.1
He had a daughter by his first wife (who died young), and two other sons and a daughter by his second wife.1
