Captain James Anson Otho Brooke, V.C.1

He fought in the First World War.1 He fought in the First Battle of Ypres.3 He gained the rank of Captain in the Gordon Highlanders.1 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 18 February 1915, posthumously, for his actions on 29 October1914. “At Fayet, while carrying a message from his colonel, he noticed that the Germans were breaking through part of the line. He immediately gathered 100 men around him and led them in a charge against the advancing Germans, saving the situation and a huge number of British lives. He was shot dead during the action.”1,3
