He held the office of Mayor of Galway from 1773 to 1774.2 He was created 1st Baronet ffrench, of Castle ffrench, co. Galway [Ireland] on 17 August 1779.1

King George III’s objection to promoting Catholics entailed ennobling the mother (nominally Protestant) rather than the son (a strict Catholic.)2 From 25 June 1761, her married name became ffrench.1 She was created Baroness ffrench of Castle ffrench, co. Galway [Ireland] (styled as The peerage was conferred in recognition of services rendered by their only son Sir Thomas Hamilton ffrench) on 12 March 1798, suo jure, with special remainder to children of her late husband.2
