He was given the name of Robert Edward Hamilton at birth.1 He fought in the Chitral Campaign in 1895, in the Relief Force.2 He fought in the British East Africa Campaign in 1896.2 He fought in the Tirah Campaign between 1897 and 1898.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Indian Army.2 He held the office of Representative Peer [Scotland].2 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lanarkshire.2 He was awarded the Kaisar-i-Hind Medal.2 He fought in the Mesopotamia Campaign between 1915 and 1918, where he was mentioned in despatches.2 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Indian Empire (C.I.E.) in 1918.2 He succeeded as the 11th Lord Belhaven and Stenton, co. Haddington [S., 1647] on 31 March 1918.1 He held the office of Grand Master of the Freemasons [Scotland] between 1931 and 1933.2 He was appointed Knight, Order of Charles XII of Sweden in 1933.2 In 1934 his name was legally changed to Robert Edward Udny-Hamilton.1
