He was educated at Wellington College, Crowthorne, Berkshire, EnglandG.4 He was commissioned in 1889, in the service of the South Wales Borderers.4 He fought in the Chitral Relief Force in 1895, where he was mentioned in despatches.4 He fought in the South Angoniland Expedition in 1898.4 He fought in the Expedition against Kwamba in 1899, where he was mentioned in despatches.4 He fought in the Ashanti Campaign in 1900, where he was mentioned in despatches twice and was severely wounded.4 He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1900.4 He fought in the Somaliliand Expedition between 1902 and 1904, where he was mentioned in despatches four times.5 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 20 January 1903, for his actions on 6 October 1902.1,5 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches nine times.4 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1915.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1917.4 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Star of India (C.S.I.) in 1918.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Star of India (K.C.S.I.) in 1919.4 He was Secretary Military Department, India Office between 1920 and 1926.4 He was GOC-in-C of the Northern Command India between 1926 and 1930.4 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1928.4 He held the office of Aide-de-Camp General to HM King George V in 1928.4 He was Military Secretary of the India Office in 1930.4
