Robert Sydney, 1st Earl of Leicester1 

Robert Sydney, 1st Earl of Leicester was born on 19 November 1563.3 He was the son of Sir Henry Sydney and Lady Mary Dudley.3 He married, firstly, Barbara Gamage, daughter of John Gamage and Wenllian verch Thomas, on 23 September 1584.4 He married, secondly, Sarah Blount, daughter of William Blount, on 25 April 1626.4 He died on 13 July 1626 at age 62.4
He was also known as Robert Sidney.5 He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Glamorgan between 1584 and 1586.4 He was appointed Knight in 1586.4 He held the office of Governor of Flushing, Low Countries between 1588 and 1616.4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Glamorgan in 1593.4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Kent from 1597 to 1598.4 He was created 1st Baron Sydney of Penshurst, co. Kent [England] on 13 May 1603.3 He was created 1st Viscount L’Isle [England] on 4 May 1605.3 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 1616.3 He was created 1st Earl of Leicester [England] on 2 August 1618.3

Barbara Gamage1 
Barbara Gamage was born in 1562.3 She was the daughter of John Gamage and Wenllian verch Thomas.1,3 She married Robert Sydney, 1st Earl of Leicester, son of Sir Henry Sydney and Lady Mary Dudley, on 23 September 1584.4 She died in May 1621.4
From 23 September 1584, her married name became Sydney.
