     Edwin Swain Quintal was born on 17 September 1900 at Norfolk Island^G.¹ He was the son of William Walter Gregorie Quintal and Emily Mary Jane Buffett.¹ He died on 5 December 1968 at age 68 at Concord repatriation Hospital, Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.² He was buried at Field of Mars, Ryde, New South Wales, Australia.²
     He fought in the Second World War, in the Middle East and New Guinea.² He gained the rank of Lance Corporal in the Australian Army Service Corps.²
