Sir Donal O’Brien1
He was appointed Knight in 1542.3 In 1557 he tried to maintain the old order of succession and as such proclaimed himself Tanaiste, or designated successor to the Chief of the name under the Brehon Law, and later, following his elder brother’s death, as Chief of the name O’Brien and Lord of Thomond with superior claim to that of his nephew.3 In 1558 he was driven out of his territory by English Lord Deputy of Ireland, the 3rd Earl of Sussex.3 In 1564 he was granted (territorial?) Barony of Corcomroe in compensation for his claims.3 He feuded in alliance with the 1st/2nd (‘The Fat’) Earl of Thomond’s other sons against his nephew 2nd (truly hereditary) Earl of Thomond and after the latter’s rebellion against the English Crown, he tried again to establish himself as Chief.3 He lived at Duagh, IrelandG.1
