He was given the name of John Hamilton-Dalrymple at birth.2 He gained the rank of Cornet in 1785 in the 28th Light Dragoons.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1797.3 He gained the rank of Captain in 1800.3 He gained the rank of Captain in 1803 in the 73rd Regiment of Foot.3 He gained the rank of Captain in 1803 in the 42nd Regiment of Foot.3 He gained the rank of Major in 1805 in the 64th Regmnet of Foot.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1805 in the 10th Regiment of Foot.3 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Haddington Burghs between 1805 and 1806.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1806 in the 22nd Regiment of Foot.3 He gained the rank of Brevet Colonel in 1813.3 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1819.3 He succeeded as the 5th Baronet Dalrymple, of North Berwick, co. Haddington [N.S., 1698] on 23 February 1834.2
