He fought in the Second Anglo-Afghan War in 1878.3 He was commissioned on 11 May 1878 with the rank of 2nd Lieutenant, in the service of the 17th Lancers.3 He gained the rank of 2nd Lieutenant on 19 October 1878 in the 9th Lancers.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant on 25 February 1880.3 In 1886 he played polo for Britain.3 He gained the rank of Captain on 20 October 1886.3 He gained the rank of Major on 5 September 1894.3 He fought in the Boer War, where he was mentioned in dispatches.3 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel on 15 March 1900.3 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1904.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.)1 He fought in the First World War.3 He gained the rank of Brigade Commander in 1915 in the 2/1st Welsh Border Mounted Brigade.1,3 He retired from the military in August 1917, with the rank of Brigadier-General.3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Warwickshire in 1923.3

Vernon Motion was born on 18 November 1904.2 He married, firstly, Margaret Holden, daughter of Arthur Holden, in 1931 at Eton, Berkshire, England.2 He married, secondly, Diana Caldwell, daughter of Seymore Caldwell, in 1937.2 He and Diana Caldwell were divorced circa 1937.2 He married, thirdly, Enid Cobb in 1942.2 He married, fourthly, Oonagh Evelyn Brassey, daughter of Lt.-Col. Harold Ernest Brassey and Lady Norah Hely Hutchinson, on 21 December 1949.1 He and Oonagh Evelyn Brassey were divorced in 1962.1 He died in 1980 at Petersfield, Hampshire, England.2
