Maurice Pascal Alers Hankey, 1st Baron Hankey was born on 1 April 1877.3 He was the son of Robert Alers Hankey and Helena A. Bakewell.3 He married Adeline Hermine Gertrude Ernestine de Smidt, daughter of Abraham de Smidt, on 16 September 1903.3 He died on 25 January 1963 at age 85.3
He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, EnglandG.3 He lived in 1891 at Brighton, Sussex, EnglandG.4 He was educated at Royal Naval College, Greenwich, London, EnglandG.3 He was with the Naval Intelligence Department between 1902 and 1907.3 He was Assistant Secretary of CID between 1908 and 1912.3 He was Secretary of CID between 1912 and 1938.3 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1916.3 He was Secretary of the War Cabinet in 1916.3 He was Secreary of the Imperial War Cabinet between 1917 and 1918.3 He was British Secretary of the Peace Conference in 1919.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1919.3 In 1919 he received after WW I the thanks of Parliament and £25,000.3 He held the office of Secretary of the Cabinet between 1920 and 1938.3 He was Clerk to the Privy Council between 1923 and 1938.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.) in 1929.3 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Royal Victorian Order (G.C.V.O.) in 1934.3 He was British Government director of the Suez Canal Company between 1938 and 1939.3 He held the office of Minister without Portfolio in 1939.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1939.3 He was created 1st Baron Hankey, of The Chart, co. Surrey [U.K.] on 3 February 1939.3 He held the office of Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster in 1940.3 He held the office of Paymaster-General between 1941 and 1942.3 He was British Government director of the Suez Canal Company between 1945 and 1958.3
