     Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt. was born on 17 March 1816.¹ He was the son of Joseph Bates and Rebekah Walker.¹ He married, firstly, Charlotte Elizabeth Umfreville-Smith, daughter of Cornelius Umfreville-Smith, in 1837.¹ He married, secondly, Ellen Thompson, daughter of Thomas Thompson, on 25 June 1844.¹ He died on 17 October 1896 at age 80.¹
     He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Plymouth between 1871 and 1880.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Hampshire.¹ He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Lancashire.¹ He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Lancashire.¹ He was created 1st Baronet Bates, of Bellefield, co. Lancaster [U.K.] on 13 May 1880.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Plymouth between 1885 and 1892.¹ He lived at Manydown Park, Hampshire, England^G.¹ He lived at Gyrn Caste, Flintshire, Wales^G.¹
     He had three daughters by his first wife.¹

     Joseph Bates married Rebekah Walker, daughter of Joseph Walker.¹ He died on 11 November 1846.¹
     He lived at Spring Hall, Yorkshire, England^G.¹

     Rebekah Walker is the daughter of Joseph Walker.¹ She married Joseph Bates.¹
     Her married name became Bates.¹

     Charlotte Elizabeth Umfreville-Smith was the daughter of Cornelius Umfreville-Smith.¹ She married Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt., son of Joseph Bates and Rebekah Walker, in 1837.¹ She died in February 1843.¹
     From 1837, her married name became Bates.¹

     Cornelius Umfreville-Smith was in the Honourable East India Company Service.¹

     Ellen Thompson was the daughter of Thomas Thompson.¹ She married Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt., son of Joseph Bates and Rebekah Walker, on 25 June 1844.¹ She died on 20 April 1905.¹
     From 25 June 1844, her married name became Bates.¹

     Thomas Thompson lived at Hessle, Yorkshire, England^G.¹

     Gilbert Thompson Bates was born on 22 April 1847.¹ He was the son of Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt. and Ellen Thompson.¹ He married Charlotte Thaxter Warren, daughter of George Warren, on 13 July 1876.¹ He died on 30 March 1917 at age 69.¹
     He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Renfrewshire.¹

     Charlotte Thaxter Warren was born before 1861. She was the daughter of George Warren.¹ She married Gilbert Thompson Bates, son of Sir Edward Bates, 1st Bt. and Ellen Thompson, on 13 July 1876.¹ She died on 27 November 1936.¹
     From 13 July 1876, her married name became Bates.¹
