Maurice FitzRobert FitzHarding de Berkeley also went by the nick-name of Maurice ‘the Make Peace’.2 He gained the title of Lord de Berkeley [feudal baron] in 1171, confirmed by Queen Eleanor in 1189.1 He enlarged the Castle of Berkeley.1 He held the office of Justice Itinerant of Gloucestershire in 1190.1

Sir Robert de Berkeley1 
Sir Robert de Berkeley also went by the nick-name of Robert ‘the Rebellious’.1 He was educated at the Court of King Kenry II.1 He was appointed Knight.1 He gained the title of Lord de Berkeley [feudal baron] in 1190, confirmed in 1198.1 In 1191 he had to pay £1000 for livery of his inheritance.1 He held the office of Justice Itinerant in 1208.1 He sided with the rebellious barons against King John and was pardoned in 1214.1 He rebelled again, and was excommunicated, but was restored in 1216, after paying a pay of £966 and all of his lands except Berkeley.1
