Robert Wemyss Muir Arbuthnot was born on 25 July 1889.1 He was the son of Robert George Arbuthnot and Helen Mary Muir.1 He married Mary Coghill, daughter of Norman Alfred Coghill, on 3 July 1915.1 He died on 10 January 1962 at age 72.1
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.1 He graduated from Trinity College, Cambridge University, Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, EnglandG, in 1910 with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.)1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Field Artillery (Special Reserve.)1 He fought in the First World War, where he was wounded twice.1 He was awarded the Croix de Guerre.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918.1
