He fought in the First Ashanti Expedition between 1873 and 1874.2 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 20 November 1874, for his actions on 4 February 1874. “At the Battle of Ordashu, he was at the head of a working party of Fanti labourers, who were exposed not only to the enemy’s fire in front but also to the wild fire of native troops to the rear. He urged them to work on without a covering party, contributing materially to the success of the day.”1,3 He gained the rank of Colonel in the Royal Engineers.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1
