General John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun1 
General John Hope, 4th Earl of Hopetoun was born on 17 August 1765 at Hopetoun House, ScotlandG.3 He was the son of John Hope, 2nd Earl of Hopetoun and Jane Oliphant.4 He was baptised on 18 September 1765 at Abercorn, West Lothian, ScotlandG.5 He married, firstly, Elizabeth Vere Hope, daughter of Hon. Charles Hope-Vere and Helen Dunbar, on 7 August 1798.6 He married, secondly, Louisa Dorothea Wedderburn, daughter of John Wedderburn and Alice Dundas, on 9 February 1803.6 He died on 27 August 1823 at age 58.6
He gained the rank of Cornet in 1784 in the 10th Dragoons.6 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Tory) for Linlithgowshire between 1790 and 1800.6 He fought in the Egyptian Campaign in 1801.6 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1802.6 He was Colonel of the 6th Battalion, 60th Rifles between 1805 and 1806.6 He was Colonel of the 92nd Regiment between 1806 and 1820.6 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1808.6 He was second-in-charge to General Sir John Moore, and succeeded him following the retreat to Corunna in 1809.6 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Bath (K.B.) in 1809.6 He gained the rank of Peninsula Wars.6 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) [Ireland] in 1812.6 He was Commander of the Forces in Ireland between 1812 and 1813.6 He was created 1st Baron Niddry of Niddry, co. Linlithgow [U.K.] on 17 May 1814.6 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1815.6 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire between 1816 and 1823.6 He succeeded as the 4th Earl of Hopetoun [S., 1703] on 29 May 1817.1 He succeeded as the 4th Viscount of Aithrie [S., 1703] on 29 May 1817.6 He succeeded as the 4th Lord Hope [S., 1703] on 29 May 1817.6 He gained the rank of General in 1819.6 He held the office of Captain-General of the Royal Company of Archers between 1819 and 1823.6 He was Colonel of the 42nd Regiment between 1820 and 1823.6
