Michael Herbert Rudolf Knatchbull, 5th Baron Brabourne of Brabourne was born on 8 May 1895.3 He was the son of Cecil Marcus Knatchbull-Hugessen, 4th Baron Brabourne of Brabourne and Helena Regina Frederica von Flesch Brunningen.3 He married Lady Doreen Geraldine Browne, daughter of George Ulick Browne, 6th Marquess of Sligo and Agatha Stewart Hodgson, on 22 January 1919.3 He died on 23 February 1939 at age 43.3
He was given the name of Michael Herbert Rudolf Knatchbull-Hugessen at birth.3 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches three times.4 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in the Royal Artillery.4 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.)4 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Air Force.4 On 29 June 1919 his name was legally changed to Michael Herbert Rudolf Knatchbull by Deed Poll.3 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.)4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Ashford between 1931 and 1933.4 He held the office of Parliamentary Private Secretary between 1932 and 1933, to the Secretary of State for India.4 He was appointed Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Indian Empire (G.C.I.E.) in 1933.4 He succeeded as the 14th Baronet Knatchbull, of Mersham Hatch, co. Kent [E., 1641] on 15 September 1933.4 He succeeded as the 5th Baron Brabourne of Brabourne, Kent [U.K., 1880] on 15 September 1933.3 He held the office of Governor of Bombay between December 1933 and 1937.4 He was appointed Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Star of India (G.C.S.I.) in 1937.4 He held the office of Governor of Bengal between 1937 and 1939.4 He held the office of Governor-General of India in 1938, acting.4
