He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, London, England.1 He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Thompson, of Hartsbourne Manor, co. Hertford [U.K., 1806] on 4 September 1904.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in dispatches twice.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1915 in the Royal Engineers and 7th, 18th and 3rd Hussars.1 He gained the rank of Brigade Major between 1915 and 1916.1 He was commander of the Light Armoured Motor Brigade, MEF in 1918.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1918.1
