He was adopted by an unknown person.1 He gained the rank of officer in 1797 in the Royal Navy.1 He was He served under Nelson at Tenerife (wounded), was commander of the 50-gun brig HMS Leander at the Battle of the Nile and while carrying dispatches to the U.K. was forced after a six-hour resistance against a French battleship Le Généreux, 74 guns, to surrender.1 He was appointed Knight in 1799 on his return to England.1 He was commander of HMS Bellona at the Battle of Copenhagen, where he lost a leg.1 He held the office of Comptroller of the Navy between 1802 and 1806.1 He was created 1st Baronet Thompson, of Hartsbourne Manor, co. Hertford [U.K.] on 11 December 1806.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Rochester between 1807 and 1816.1 He held the office of Treasurer of Greenwich Hospital in 1811.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the Bath (K.C.B.) in 1815.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of the Bath (G.C.B.) in 1822.1 He gained the rank of Vice-Admiral of the Red.1
