     He gained the rank of Captain and Brevet Major (Acting Lieutenant-Colonel) in the 11th Hussars.1 He gained the rank of Temporary Lieutenant-Colonel in 1917 in the Gloucestershire Regiment.1 He was awarded the Order of St. Stanislas of Russia 3rd Class with Swords.1 He fought in the First World War, and he was mentioned in despatches.1 He was awarded the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1918 and bar.1
