     Robert Ramsay was born on 27 February 1787.1 He was the son of Sir Alexander Ramsay of Balmain, 1st Bt. and Elizabeth Bannerman.1 He married Margaret Cruikshank, daughter of Patrick Cruikshank of Stracathro, in May 1817.1 He died on 20 December 1846 at age 59.1
     He was given the name of Robert Burnett at birth.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 14th Foot.1 In 1806 his name was legally changed to Robert Ramsay.
