Alexander James Dallas was born on 21 June 1759 at Kingston, JamaicaG.1 He was the son of Robert Dallas and Sarah Elizabeth Cormack.1 He married Arabella Maria Smith, daughter of Major George Smith and Arabella Barlow, in 1780.1 He died on 16 January 1817 at age 57 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, U.S.A.G.1
He lived between 1781 and 1783 at JamaicaG.1 He was admitted to Pennsylvania Bar in 1785.1 He was editor of the Pennsylvania Herald between 1787 and 1788.1 He was editor of the Columbian Magazine between 1787 and 1789.1 He held the office of Secretary of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania between 1791 and 1801.1 He held the office of U.S. Attorney between 1801 and 1814, for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.1 He held the office of Secretary of the Treasury [U.S.] between 6 October 1814 and 21 October 1816.1
