     He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow, London, EnglandG.1 He graduated from New College, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG, with a Master of Arts (M.A.)1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the Reserve of Officers late 16th Lancers.1 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) in 1919.1 He was a director of Powell Duffryn Ltd.1 He was a director of Sun Alliance Insurance Company.1 He was chairman of Nyasaland Railways Ltd.1 He was Assistant Under-Secretary of the Foreign Office between 1940 and 1945.1 He was Chief Security Officer, War Cabinet between 1942 and 1945.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1946.1 He held the office of High Sheriff of Rutland in 1947.1 He held the office of Lord-Lieutenant of Rutland between 1957 and 1963.1
