He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for St. Pancras between 1886 and 1890.1 He succeeded as the 2nd Baron Lamington, of Lamington, co. Lanark [U.K., 1880] on 15 February 1890.1 He held the office of Governor of Queensland between 1895 and 1901.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Order of St. Michael and St. George (G.C.M.G.)1 He was appointed Knight Grand Commander, Order of the Indian Empire (G.C.I.E.)1 He held the office of Governor of Bombay between 1903 and 1907.1 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.2
