He was commissioned in 1899, in the service of the British Army.1 He fought in the Boer War.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1906.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1915.1 He gained the rank of Major in 1915.1 He succeeded as the 10th Baronet Elphinstone, of Logie Elphinstone, co. Aberdeen and Nova Scotia [N.S., 1701] on 30 November 1927.1
