George Legge, 1st Baron Dartmouth was born in 1647.2 He was the son of William Legge and Elizabeth Washington.1 He married Barbara Archibald, daughter of Sir Henry Archibald.1 He died on 25 October 1691 at Tower of London, The City, London, EnglandG.1
He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.)1 He was naval commander of the Royal Navy between 1667 and 1672.1 He held the office of Lieutenant-Governor of Portsmouth in 1672.1 He held the office of Governor of Portsmouth in 1673.1 He was Master of Horse and Gentleman of the Bedchamber to the Duke of York, later King James II.1 He was Colonel of the Foot Regiment in 1677.1 He held the office of Master of the Ordnance.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General.1 He was Admiral of the Tangier Expedition.1 He was created 1st Baron Dartmouth, of Dartmouth, Devon [England] on 2 December 1682, with a special remainder to his brother William.1 In 1688 He was the Admiral to intercept the Prince of Orange, and subsequently was sent to the Tower.1
