General John Fane, 7th Earl of Westmorland1 
He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Hythe between 1708 and 1711.1 He fought in the Battle of Malplaquet.1 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Kent between 1715 and 1722.1 He was Colonel of the various Guards regiments between 1715 and 1737.1 He gained the rank of Colonel in the 1st Troop, Horse Guards.2 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Whig) for Buckingham between 1727 and 1734.1 He was created 1st Baron Catherlough, co. Catherlough [Ireland] on 4 October 1733.2 He succeeded as the 7th Earl of Westmorland [E., 1624] on 4 June 1736.1 He succeeded as the 7th Baron Burghersh, co. Sussex [E., 1624] on 4 June 1736.1 He succeeded as the 10th Lord le Despenser [E., 1314] on 4 June 1736.1 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1742.1 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1742.1 He was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of Civil Law (D.C.L.) in 1749.1 He held the office of High Steward between 1754 and 1759.1 He held the office of Chancellor of Oxford University between 1759 and 1762.1 He gained the rank of General of Horse in 1761.1
On his death, his Irish barony became extinct, and the barony of le Despencer fell into abeyance between the descendants of his sisters for a year.2 He has an extensive biographical entry in the Dictionary of National Biography.4
