He was educated at Fettes College, Edinburgh, Midlothian, ScotlandG.1 He was educated at Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, Kent, England.1 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of East Lothian.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) for Esat Lothian.1 He fought in the Sudan Campaign in 1898, and was mentioned in despatches.1 He gained the rank of Major-General between 1913 and 1914 in the Royal Artillery, AAG War Office.1 He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1916.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.) in 1915.1 He held the office of Member of the Executive Council [Malta] in 1916.1 He was awarded the Order of the White Eagle of Serbia 2nd Class with swords.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of St. Michael and St. George (C.M.G.) in 1917.1 He was awarded the Commandeur, Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur.1
