He fought in the First World War, in France and Mesopotamia.2 He was awarded the Military Cross (M.C.) on 17 May 1917 for gallantry at Kut, where he was wounded.1 He gained the rank of Captain in the 5th Battalion, Devonshire Regiment and Machine Gun Corps.1

Hon. Claude Hope-Morley1 
He was given the name of Claude Hope at birth. He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.2 He gained the rank of Captain in the Grenadier Guards (SR.)2 On 24 October 1923 his name was legally changed to Claude Hope-Morley by Deed Poll.
