Rear-Admiral Hon. Edward Barry Stewart Bingham, V.C. usually went by his middle name of Barry.1 He fought in the First World War, where he was mentioned in despatches.1 He fought in the Battle of Jutland on 31 May 1916.4 He was awarded the Victoria Cross (V.C.) on 15 September 1916, for his actions on 31 May 1916. “At the Battle of Jutland, whilst in command of H.M.S. Nestor, he led his division of destroyers towards the enemy battlecruisers. On his way, he engaged a flotilla of enemy destroyers, sinking two of them. He then sighted the enemy fleet and closed to within 3,000 yards to obtain a good position to fire his torpedoes. His division was under concentrated attack throughout this attack and Nestor was subsequently sunk. He was picked up by a German destroyer adn taken prisoner.”1,4 He was awarded the Order of St. Stanislaus of Russia 2nd Class with swords.1 He was appointed Officer, Order of the British Empire (O.B.E.) in 1919.1 He gained the rank of Rear-Admiral in the Royal Navy. He was Naval Aide-de-Camp to HM King George V in 1931.1
