     He was appointed Member, Order of the British Empire (M.B.E.)1 He gained the rank of Major-General in the POW Own Yorkshire Regiment.1 He was appointed Companion, Order of the Bath (C.B.)1 He was educated at Royal Military College, Sandhurst, Berkshire, England.2 He was head of the British Defence Staff between 1988 and 1991 at Washington, D.C., U.S.A.2
