He gained the rank of officer on 16 February 1732/33 in the Royal Navy.1 He succeeded as the 6th Lord Banff [S., 1642] on 29 July 1738.1 He succeeded as the 6th Baronet Ogilvie [S., 1627] on 29 July 1738.1 He gained the rank of Captain in 1741 in the Royal Navy.1 He gained the rank of Commander from 1742 to 1743 in the H.M.S. Hastings, when he captured a Spanish privateer.1 In 1743 he received the freedom of the City of GLasgow.1
