Robert Michael James Gascoyne-Cecil, 7th Marquess of Salisbury was born on 30 September 1946.3 He is the son of Robert Edward Peter Gascoyne-Cecil, 6th Marquess of Salisbury and Marjorie Olein Wyndham-Quin.4 He married Hannah Ann Stirling, daughter of Lt.-Col. William Joseph Stirling of Keir and Susan Rachel Bligh, on 7 January 1970.3
He was educated at Eton College, Windsor, Berkshire, EnglandG.3 He was educated at Christ Church, Oxford University, Oxford, Oxfordshire, EnglandG.3 He was styled as Viscount Cranborne between 1972 and 1992.4 He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) (Conservative) for Dorset South between 1979 and 1987.3 He held the office of Deputy Lieutenant (D.L.) of Dorset in 1987.3 He succeeded as the 13th Baron Cecil of Essendon, co. Rutland [E., 1603] in 1992.3 He held the office of Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of Defence between 1992 and 1994.3 He was appointed Privy Counsellor (P.C.) in 1994.3 He held the office of Leader of the House of Lords between 1994 and 1997.3 He held the office of Lord Privy Seal between 1994 and 1997.3 He was created Baron Gascoyne-Cecil, of Essendon in the County of Rutland [U.K. Life Peer] on 17 November 1999.3 He succeeded as the 13th Earl of Salisbury [E., 1605] on 11 July 2003. He succeeded as the 13th Viscount Cranborne, co. Dorset [E., 1604] on 11 July 2003. He succeeded as the 7th Marquess of Salisbury [G.B., 1789] on 11 July 2003.5 He was appointed Knight, Order of the Garter (K.G.) in 2019.6
