     Sir Humphrey Gilbert was born in 1539.¹ He was the son of Otho Gilbert and Katherine Champernowne.¹ He married Anne Aucher, daughter of John Aucher.¹ He died on 9 September 1583, lost at sea on board H.M.S. Squirrel.¹
     He lived at Compton, Devon, England. He was appointed Knight on 1 January 1570.¹ He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for Plymouth in 1571.¹ In 1583 he founded the colony of Newfoundland.¹

     Anne Aucher is the daughter of John Aucher.¹ She married Sir Humphrey Gilbert, son of Otho Gilbert and Katherine Champernowne.¹
     Her married name became Gilbert.¹
