Sir James Campbell, 1st and last Bt. was born on 25 May 1763 at Inveraray, Argyllshire, Scotland.2 He was the son of Sir James Campbell of Killean, 2nd of Inverneill and Jean Campbell.2 He married Agnes Margaret Hunter, daughter of John Hunter and Anne Home, in 1794.2 He died on 5 June 1819 at age 56, without issue.1,2
He was commissioned in 1780 with the rank of officer, in the service of the 1st Royal Scots Regiment.2 He fought in the American War of Independence between 1780 and 1783.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant in 1781 in the 60th (Royal American) Regiment.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1783.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1787 in the 73rd (Perthshire) Regiment of Foot.2 He gained the rank of Captain in 1789 in the 19th Light Dragoons.2 He fought in the Third Anglo-Mysore War.2 He gained the rank of Major in March 1794.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in 1804 in the 61st (South Gloucestershire) Regiment of Foot.2 He held the position of 10th Chief of Clan Tearlach from in 1805.2 He fought in the Napoleonic Wars between 1805 and 1813, in Naples and Sicily.2 He gained the rank of Major-General in 1808.2 He gained the rank of Lieutenant-General in 1813.2 He held the office of Governor of the Ionian Islands between 1814 and 1816.1 He was appointed Knight Grand Cross, Hanoverian Order (G.C.H.) in 1817.1 He was created 1st Baronet Campbell, of Inverneill, co.
