Sir James Bowman, 1st Bt. was born on 8 March 1898.1 He was the son of Robert James Bowman and Mary Murray.1 He married Jean Brooks, daughter of Henry Brooks, on 10 March 1923.1 He died on 25 September 1978 at age 80.3
He fought in the First World War between 1914 and 1918.1 He held the office of Justice of the Peace (J.P.) in 1935.1 He was vice-president of the Mineworkers Federation of Great Britain (later National Union of Mineworkers) between 1938 and 1949.1 He was chairman of the National Coal Board, Northern Division between 1950 and 1955.1 He was appointed Commander, Order of the British Empire (C.B.E.) in 1952.1 He was chairman of the National Coal Board from February 1956 to January 1961.1 He was appointed Knight Commander, Order of the British Empire (K.B.E.) in 1957.1 He was created 1st Baronet Bowman, of Killingworth, co. Northumberland [U.K.] on 18 January 1961.1
