Sir Claude Champion de Crespigny, 4th Bt.

Sir Claude Champion de Crespigny, 4th Bt. was born on 20 April 1847 at Chelsea, London, England.2 He was the son of Sir Claude William Champion de Crespigny, 3rd Bt. and Mary Tyrell.2 He married Georgiana Louisa Margaret McKerrell, daughter of Robert McKerrell and Emily Pauline Staveley, on 19 September 1872.2 He died on 26 June 1935 at age 88.2
He was educated at Temple Grove School, East Sheen, London, England.2 In 1861 he became bankrupt.2 He gained the rank of Midshipman in 1862 in the Royal Navy, n H.M.S. Warrior.2 He gained the rank of Ensign in 1866 in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.2 He succeeded as the 4th Baronet Champion de Crespigny, of Champion Lodge, Cumberwell, co. Surrey [U.K., 1805] in 1868. In 1883 he became the first man to cross the North Sea in a balloon, winning the Balloon Society’s gold medal.2 He wrote the book Memoirs of Sir Claude Champion De Crespign, published 1896.2
